DUVAL COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY CHAIRMAN
CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RESIGNATION OF PUBLIC DEFENDER SHIRK (R)
JACKSONVILLE, Fla., September 4, 2013 – Today Duval County Democratic Party Chairman Neil Henrichsen called for the immediate resignation of scandal-ridden Public Defender Matt Shirk. This follows revelations from an interview of Shirk late last week by the Florida Times-Union where he admitted to allowing alcoholic drinks in his public law office, sending “inappropriate texts” to female employees and violating other policies of his elected office.
"Now that we have finally heard from Mr. Shirk, it is clear that he must resign his public position immediately to restore good government and public trust to the Public Defender’s Office,” said Duval County Democratic Party Chairman Neil Henrichsen. “Can anyone truly believe that this official, who has rarely shown up to work, is serving the taxpayers well and advancing good government? No way.”
“Despite having a prestigious law firm provide Shirk much-needed pro bono law advice on public records since it appears he is not able to handle the job himself, perhaps the most troubling abuse of our taxpayer dollars is the public footing the bill for Mr. Shirk to get public relations and political consulting advice from a private agency,” continues Henrichsen. “That clearly shows Mr. Shirk puts his political future above the people he claims to serve as an elected official.”
