Today’s decision by six activist justices not only severely restricts the freedom of millions of women to make deeply personal health care decisions, it overturns nearly a half-century of the precedent set by Roe v. Wade.
Florida Republicans Marco Rubio and Ron DeSantis now have unprecedented power to enact their dangerous political agenda by eradicating the fundamental right to privacy. They support draconian bans on reproductive healthcare, birth control, and marriage equality. Today’s decision will have far-reaching consequences that will impact virtually every American.
The Duval County Democratic Party condemns this court’s radical decision and reaffirms the message laid bare by Justice Sotomayor: With sorrow — for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection — we dissent.
