Duval Dems Condemn Don’t Say Gay Bill & Harmful Legislation

In response to the discriminatory legislation recently signed into law by Governor DeSantis, the Duval County Democratic Party released the following statement.

JACKSONVILLE, FL – “Instead of addressing issues pressing to many Floridians such as the rising cost of rent, property insurance, and health care, Gov. DeSantis and the Florida GOP decided to continue waging a culture war on the most vulnerable members of our society.

“While we should be working together to deal with these critical issues, DeSantis and the Florida GOP pushed bills like the Don’t Say Gay Bill. One of the many examples of culture war legislation that will harm LGBTQ+ youth and paralyze teachers with fear of lawsuits. Restricting education and private counseling, LGBTQ+ youth will now have no safe place to simply be themselves and learn. Every student deserves to feel safe, affirmed, and accepted in the classroom. We stand in opposition to this hateful piece of legislation and condemn DeSantis for signing it into law.

“The Florida GOP also passed Florida Power & Light’s anti-rooftop solar bill, the 15-week abortion ban bill, and HB-7 which would censor classroom and workplace discussions around race. We urge voters to contact the governor’s office and ask him, as we do, to veto these harmful pieces of legislation.”
