Mayor Alvin Brown and Rep. Corrine Brown are hosting a reception in honor of Representative James Clyburn, the highest ranking African-American in Congress, who will visit Jacksonville on July 13. Copies of his new memoir, “Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black,” will be available for purchase and autograph.
Rep. Clyburn’s book recounts his humble beginnings in rural South Carolina and his early involvement in civil rights and public service. He was elected to represent the Sixth Congressional District in South Carolina in 1992, and was elected Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1999. Three years later, he was unanimously elected Chair of the Democratic Caucus. During his career in public service, he has earned a reputation as one of the most powerful voices for social justice in America.
“Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black” was published on May 1 by the University of South Carolina Press.
To make a reservation for the reception and book signing, please contact the City of Jacksonville’s Office of Special Events at (904) 630-3690.
