A panel of experts, including the JAXPORT CEO, will discuss the proposal for a controversial deepening of the St. Johns River as well as offloading alternatives in order to accommodate larger ships during the next meeting of the Beaches Democratic Club, Tuesday, July 21, at 7 p.m. at the public library in Neptune Beach. The event, open to the public, will be preceded by a meet-and-greet at 6:30.
Panelists are Brian Taylor, JAXPORT CEO; Lisa Rinaman, St. Johns Riverkeeper; Gabe Hanson, spokesperson for the Sierra Club of Northeast Florida; and Dr. David Jaffee, University of North Florida Professor of Sociology, whose research includes the economic and community impact of port expansion. Moderator will be Dr. Tom Collins, a retired physicist and proponent of offshore loading alternatives for large container ships the current St. Johns River depth cannot accommodate. Cost of river deepening is expected to cost taxpayers nearly of $1 billion. Questions from the public will be taken following seven-minute presentations and three-minute rebuttals by each speaker.
