Bring three things:
1) A Re-Gift Raffle Item
(something you got for a gift or some white elephant item you are willing to part with)
2) Your checkbook (annual membership dues are collected in January)
3) Cold weather garment or blanket for a homeless person
This week, as you rummage through your collection of cold weather gear, see if there are any gently used items you can bring to donate to Jax Beach Brothers Keeper, a local group that provides food and clothing to the homeless who fall through the cracks of safety net programs.
Tracy Gebeaux, founder of Brothers Keeper, will be the guest speaker our meeting. Gebeaux has received wide recognition for his efforts, which include being featured in a Ford Motor Co. national TV commercial filmed in 2014 for the charitable work he does out of the back of his pickup truck. Friends nominated him for the Ford contest featuring people who did good deeds using their vehicles. Cash donations help fund distribution of water and food he hands out. He depends on clothing and blanket donations to help area homeless keep warm in the winter. Gebeaux, vice president of a local roofing company, was himself homeless in 2006 when he lost his job during an economic downturn.
ELECTION OF NEW OFFICERS
You must be a dues paying member in order to receive a ballot and cast your votes, so bring your checkbook. Yearly dues, which are collected each January or upon joining the Beaches Democratic Club, are $25 for an individual member and $35 for a family. The money is used to finance get-out-the-vote efforts and to donate a combined total of up to $500 to worthy candidates designated by the board.
The ballot will contain a recommended slate of offices chosen by a nominating committee but also a write-in column. The nominating committee recommends the following officers: Billee Bussard, president; Mary Ann Segars, vice president; Steve Haerter, secretary; Lynn Cattin, treasurer; and for the board Joe Burt, Charles Kohn, Hanna Moore, Diana Townsend and James Walker. Non-elected board members are former Beaches Democratic Club presidents Peyton Hopkins and Tom Collins, along with Jeff Bertsch, the parliamentarian who is appointed by the president.
